Knee or Travel Rugs
These exquisitely crafted rugs are made of New Zealand Romney wool. Natural colour wool in cream and various shades of grey for the warp of the rugs is sourced from local woollen mills. Wool for the weft is sourced locally from farmers that have agreed to let wool on specific pre selected sheep grow for a full year (as opposed to the normal six monthly shear) before it is shorn. This provides a long wool staple ideal for hand spinning .
The rugs are handwoven on a Bartlett floor loom in lengths of 1.85 meter (74 inch) and a width of 95 centimeters (38 inch) with 15 centimeter (6 inch) fringes at each end. These fringes are hand knotted before the rug is milled by pounding and washing in warm water and soap.
The end product is a beautiful natural coloured rug. Some of the natural coloured rugs however are hand dyed in red, hotpink, green and blue as a result of popular demand by individual customers.
